I'm 21 and i work for a drafting company. i work from 7 to 5 everyday during the week. but i have friday afternoon off. but i'm also a full time college student, so i go to my classes after work from 7 to 9. i talk with my boyfriend every night before i go to sleep. so i basically only sleep 4 to 5 hours a night. and during weekends, i just want to go out. so i sleep about the same or even less during the weekends. and on top of all this, i'm always stressed out about work and school. i know it's not good. but what exactly is so bad about not sleeping enough? what's gonna happen to me?

First of all, try not to add stress to the equation. Relax. Take a deep breath. Now ...I reckon you already know the effects of sleep deprivation, so let's discuss ways to rest. Each person's need for sleep will vary. Some folks get by just fine on 3 or 4 hours (although I do not know how), while others may need 10 hours to feel great.

Here are some tips to help you get to sleep and stay asleep.

1. Never use your bed for anything but sleeping .. .. let me rephrase that. No reading in bed, no watching television. No letter writing. No phone calls.

2. Avoid caffeine, particularly after 5 pm.

3. Avoid alcohol before bed. It may help you get to sleep but lasts only a couple of hours. You won't get the deep REM-free sleep you need to recharge.

4. If you wake up, GET up. Go get a glass of warm milk, wash your face. Do some deep breathing exercise to relax and then go back to bed. If you just lay there, you will toss and turn .. I've found getting up works much better.

5. Do not drag your day into your night. In other words, take care of the day's business before going to bed, so you won't lay there and stress. It's also good practice to not drag your yesterdays into your todays. Each day is a fresh canvas; paint it with fresh, bright colors not the dried up used ones from the past.

6. Take time for yourself every day. Meditate. Read. No interruptions (that includes the boyfriend). This is YOU time. If you do not take care of yourself, how will you take care of your relationships? Your work? Your school? Ponder this .. and tell folks you need some time to recharge .. meditate. They'll understand.

7. Try a light facial before bedtime...cucumber slices over the eyes will help relax and soothe away stress.

8. Listen to music designed to heal. Liquid Mind, Llewellyn, Merlin's Magic, Steve Halpern, the Guo Brothers .. all make music that will cause your body's natural rhythms to slow .. slow...slow .. and therefore, work more efficiently. (Also a good technique for homework... the slower your body's rhythms, the more efficiently your mind works .. easier to memorize!)

9. If you can, set up your bedroom to be the most soothing room in your house. Soft fabrics, soft light. Get rid of the bright light bulbs. Get dressed in the bathroom, if you must, but keep the room cool and dim. Try blue lights ... not blacklights .. but blue lighting. It is bright enough to see but does not flood the area (shorter wavelengths). Red lights are good for maintaining your night vision, if you have to get up in the middle of the night.

I have about the same schedule you do...but for different reasons.

I feel pretty dam*** tired by mid afternoons. I get moody, I can't concentrate, I get sick easier, I exercise less, I'm not as good of a friend, wife, Mother and Daughter because I only get 4-5 hours of sleep a night.

Sometimes I take a quick nap when I'm at a red light...I wake up when people honk at me because it's green...

If it doesn't bother you...then keep this schedule...but sooner or later it'll catch up with you. We really require 7-8 hours a night, ideally.

That is bad. You should get atleast 8 to 9 hoours of sleep for your body to function properly. Sleeping is the time when your body and skin to fix and recovers itself. If you don't get enough sleep, you'll: -always be in a bad mood
-you'll eat more. Research has it people who don't get enough sleep put on more weght easily
-you won't be able to concentrate properly meaing you grades and your performance at work will suffer
-you'll always be stressed out. you're feeling this already
-research also show people who don't get enough sleep are more likely to suffer and get heart disease and stroke.
-you'll get eyebugs (noone wants that) and not look the best you can be
More:
* irritability
* blurred vision
* slurred speech
* memory lapses / memory loss
* general confusion
* hallucinations
* hernia
* belemia

Do not worry too much. Your body system automatically adjust to your schedule. Lack of sleep will weaken your immune system - so you catch cold easily. Over a long period, you will have burnt out and also there is a danger your brain function will go haywire. You may experience extreme tiredness and breathing difficulties, loose appetite and weight. If this happens, you may have to be hospitalised.
So do not fight it for too long.

you can get very sick. you are more likely to catch illnesses due to a weakend and stressed immune system. i can imagine youre extremely moody as well. it can take a huge toll on your body and you can shut down and have a break down physically and mentally. you should really cut back on the work, im not sure of your situation, youre in college so im assuming its not great, from experience haha. you need to find time to sleep and just relax its really unhealthy for your body and mind. please find the time!

Well you know its not good not having enough sleep, so you have to change something like partime school, or partime work to get enough rest. and maybe getting some rest on the weekends instead of partying.

You may get sick, you won't do as well in school or work. You may burn out. You may be more stressed because your capacity to deal with it is diminished by lack of sleep.

Learned in Psych. that R.E.M. (dream) sleep restores your mind, which helps you think/comprehend/remember better, and non R.E.M. sleep is for body restoration. If you don't get enough of non R.E.M., your body starts to shut itself down (not enough R.E.M. and your mind starts to shut down). This is why it is important to have a healthy sleep each night.
