The temperament of any dog is based largely on the care and dedication of the owner. Unfortunately, many non-ideal owners are attracted to pits. If you read most of the reports about pit bull attacks, you will see that most of the attacks involved intact dogs and/or dogs that were chained in a yard. Both of those factors are HUGELY indicative of a dog that will be vicious. The "vicious dog" label is cyclical, as it was Dobermans several years ago and Rottweilers before that and German Shepards before that.

It has a lot to do with how the dog is raised, but secondly we don't hear about other breeds of dogs attacking because pit bulls and rottweilers carry the stigmata of being dangerous breeds so when one does attack everyone runs to make it national news and when a different breed attacks its either not reported or it doesn't make national headlines and that dog is silently put to sleep or the owners pay there fines etc and life goes on. But no one rests until the dangerous breed dog's head is on a spit.

Responsible, loving pit bull owners would know them as "wonderful, loving pets." Those who raise them to be aggressive would have an aggressive pit bull. Just like any other dog...

Bans on pit bulls target the wrong end of the leash.
Please, watch the following video showing the role humans have played:
http://www.pitbullproblem.tk/

"Labradors and cocker spaniels are statistically more dangerous."

Pit bull attacks are RARE. Temperament testing has proven them to be no more likely to attack or bite than any other dog (and actually less likely than most popular dogs). But because of the breeding, when they do bite the attack is more aggressive (strong jaws allow them to bite deeply and hold on). That's why they make news headlines.

Also, there are many people who raise pit bulls as guard dogs, attack dogs, and fighting dogs. When a particular breed is used regularly by owners who encourage aggressive behaviour, the dog gains a bad reputation. This is the result of how the animal is raised, NOT an indication of the dogs temperament.

Recently the majority of dog bites have been to children from labs and retrievers simply because those dogs greatly outnumber others as pets (previous to this, most bites came from poodles and german shepherds). Children often unintentionally provoke a dog and need to be shown how to treat animals. For example, most dogs don't like hugs, and children show affection by hugging. A younger child might grab a handful of fur or pull fiercely on a dog's ear. It's wise to supervise children with dogs (and in general).

(Keep in mind that pit bulls are not a single breed. The name commonly refers to several breeds, including the American Staffordshire terrier, the Staffordshire bull terrier and the American pit bull terrier.)

Wow. Just the other day a chocolate Lab was shot by our local police because it attacked some people and couldn't be stopped. You can never predict ANY dog's behavior! Pits are loyal dogs and make wonderful pets, but have that bad reputation and as long as it stays with the breed, there will be azzholes abusing them and other azzholes wanting them banned.

We used to own a pitbull and I can tell you he was the sweetest thing ever. Infact we had him out walking one day and my mother-in-law's maltese mix attacked him and he did nothing but try to run away from it. They are not all viscous dogs. I have heard of more small dogs biting owners or visitors then pitbulls or rotts.

And you can never truly predict the actions of ANY animal due to past conduct. THAT has nothing to do with pitbulls.

I so agree with you I am so tired of people singing the praises of pit bulls . I think that they would have a totally different take on things if one of those owners saw their supposidly loving pet rip the face off their 4 yr old !!!! Then what would they say ? I grant you that they would be so ready to shoot that dog that was supposidly a loving wonderfull pet before this happened. Yes granted any dog is capable of biting ,but very few do the damage that a pit does. i am so glad to see that they are other people who feel as I do . these dogs are not needed or wanted in my neighborhood. good luck.

I was bit by my own pit when I was younger and up until that point it had been very loving and gentle. I actually believe though any dog will bite in the right situation, it's that pits have such strong jaws they can do so much damage even just nipping. There is no way I would ever trust one near a child.

Any dog can bite even my little baby pug. But a pit's attack is vicious enough to kill. A guy here was attacked by 3 of them on the loose so we have a fairly good ordinance. KC MO has banned them for 20 years. The pits aren't getting a bad rap. We have documented proof that they are the dogs that are maiming and killing around here.

Here is a list of many breeds that have attacked including labradors, cocker spaniels, jack russells, poodles, dachsunds and chihuahuas http://www.understand-a-bull.com/BSL/OtherBreedBites/AllDogsBite.htm

Here is an article about an unprovoked attack by a labrador http://www.chako.org/dogblog/forums/534/ShowPost.aspx

And funny you should mention terriers.... as a pit bull is, point of fact, a terrier ~ http://www.bulldogbreeds.com/

Well i have a pit and i used to have a chocolate lab and my boyfriend has has pits all his life and to be honestwith you my pit is a very caring affectionate dog. it depends on how they are raised. it is true thaqt they have the ability to maul and fight but it depends on their owners. people use them to fight because they have lock jaw but they feed them raw meat and train them that way. dont judge a book by its cover
