To connect to internet you need a Public IP which would allow you to send internet requests to other public address.
But giving a public address to all the internet users is not easy.
So we share Public addresses. Internet Service Providers take internet in 10-20 Public IP's and share them to 200-500 customers.
There are 3 types of Internet Service providers
1. Leased Lines - ISP would give internet to Companies using public IP's Based on speed charges vary from 30-40 thousand to lakhs
2. Cable Internet - a guy take an internet connection from ISP and lays cables to homes and shares one or more publice IP's with 100-200 users.
3. ADSL- Same as above but instead of laying cables uses the existing telephone network.
4. GPRS/EDGE - Same as above but uses GSM Network like Airtel Tata
5. R Connect - Same as above but uses CDMA Network like Reliance

Where can you get a T1 for $100/mo??
Last I checked it was still running $1000.
I use a satellite because it's the only viable option I have. If I could get a T1 for the same price I'd jump on it. Well maybe not I wouldn't want to break it and have to pay the outrageous service charge to have it fixed.

Dial-up, basic and slow
DSL, anywhere from slow to ultra high speed
Cable, bit faster (runs my network here)
T1, mostly for business about $100/month about 1 gigabit transfer rate
T3 & T5 faster transfer rate and more expensive then T1
