There can be various reasons, but the main reasons, in my opinion, would be: 1. Money does equal power to a certain extent. 2. Government requires leadership and the ability to communicate with people face to face and in large groups. Most people fear either both or one of those which holds them back. 3. The poor usually only know one way of having money which is working for it. A great book for anyone to read about making and managing money is "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki. And when the poor are working they either don't have the time to get out and campaign or would rather do other things after work. There could be other reasons as well, but I believe these three primarily explains why the rich people usually get to govern.

Controlling the population has always been a dominant concern of power and privilege, particularly since the first modern democratic revolution in 17th centiry England. The self described "men of best quality" were appalled as a " giddy multitude of beasts in men`s shapes" rejected the basic framework of the civil conflict raging in England between King and Government " by countrymen like ourselves, that know our wants" not by " Knights and gentlemen that make us laws, that are chosen to fear and opress us, and do not know the peoples sores" The men of best quality recognized that if the people are so " depraved and corrupt " as to " confer places of power and trust u[pon wicked and undeserving men, they forfeit their power in this behalf unto those that are good, though but few."
Almost three decades later Wilsonian idealism, asit is standardly termed, adopted a rather similar stance. Abroad, it is Washingtons responsibility to ensure that government is in the hands of " the good though but a few" At home, it is necessary to safeguard a system of elite decision making and public ratification_" polyarchy, " in the terminology of political science_ not democracy.

Basically, the rich political elite a have, over the years manouevred themselves into power and instilled systems within government which do not allow the common person access to their power.

Our custodians of political power will never relinquish it to the common person because they do not believe they would be able to use it properly. It`s that simple.

Time is money. When you're poor, you spend most of you energy and time providing as many of the basics for yourself and your family that you can. You don't have a lot of time to campaign. Time is money. Convincing those with money that they should pay your bills while you campaign and you are the right person for the political job takes time away from providing for your family. Time that most working poor don't have . The non-working poor are standing in a line somewhere and can't afford to lose their place in line. That leaves those with a lot of extra money to toss around. With nothing better to do than campaign, it becomes a lucrative incentive to win politically so you can open those off shore/ swiss bank accounts...ie cheney &bush set for life, baby. Just by buying Florida........only in America...........

Because they have the money and poor people need money as much as the rich folks.

But rich people would make you work hard while not getting paid your worth, so that they could make you work for them indefinitely.

Because only smart people have excessive cash.

Rich people are smarter than poor people.

It's simple mathematical logic. The higher your IQ, the more money you earn.

Poor people have lower IQ's.

Sadly though, give a good poor person a bunch of money, lottery or something, and they go broke in a year or two. Doesn't matter if they won 10 or 100 million.
