There are many reasons :
Some unstable programme make a PC hang. In case you have installed a new programme / software and have noticed this, install the same.
Some times if have very software loaded and most of them are loaded at the time of start of computer, PC may hang. You should delete unwanted / rarely used programmes.
It may hang if the memory is unstable , remove it clean it and put it back ( If you do not know about hardware, do not attempt it, it may create other problems )

* Virus
* Spyware
* Windows screwed up
* You visited some sites that threw in lot of spyware or worms or some tracking software; AND your windows registry has hard time digesting all those crap that was thrown at it
* Hardware problem
* You installed a new device like USB printer, but forgot to install the device driver

I can go on and on. Unless you are specific what you did *before* your PC was dead, no one can give you correct answer.

That's a broad question.
You can troubleshoot some here.

1. Restart
2. Delete unnecessary files in your PC, i.e spy ware, ad wares etc.
3. Increase memory if too low
4. Defragment the disk often times.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
