First, with live bearers, the mother usually waits for a time when the tank is quieter- after you've turned the light off at night. I didn't know this until recently - got some advice from the place where I buy my fish.
How do you know when the female is about to give birth? Watch her size - I think the gestation period is about 6 weeks.

you ll see either 1. baby fry trying to hide. or 2. some eggs

generally, if your livebearer is having babies you will see one or two swimming at the bottom or top of your tank.

only livebearers like guppies have fries not babies. the rest lay eggs..
