In the very early 70's it became publicized that it was legal in New York State. If it was in the 60's it was the very late - late 60's.

It has been around since who knows when but it was illegal and always backstreet.
Sometimes done professionally.
Sometimes by mid-wives.
Sometimes by someone that just needed drug money...

It was considered a very dangerous thing to do and was thought to be putting your life on the line.

I would bet a nickel that you could both be right. LOL

GOOD LUCK

The Egyptians practiced it. So did many other ancient civilizations. They have found written "recipes" of herbs and such that would cause a woman to abort a fetus. And also lists of instructions on how to abort a fetus by introducing medical tools through the vagina.

There were also condoms in ancient times. They were made from the cleaned intestines of sheep. Just thought I would throw that tid bit n.

Abortions have been around since the dark ages. Abortions have been preformed in other ways through out the ages back in the days before modern medicine un-wanted pregnancy were handled by certain herbal drinks given to mothers to rid there body's of pregnancy.

They have been around from the beginning of time. The first abortions were through the use of blunt force in the abdominal area of the woman.
Even the Bible mentions the abortion of a woman due to the "striving" of men.

Actually, that's a really tough question to answer. If you're talking about modern abortion in America, it depends upon what technological level you're asking about.

According to one link I found regarding the United States, "abortion laws began to appear in the 1820s, forbidding abortion after the fourth month of pregnancy."

But I've read anecdotal evidence of people using herbs to abort pregnancies going back to pre-history (e.g. more than 2,000 years ago with regard to Western history).

I would bet you could find even earlier references in Middle Eastern and Chinese history, since some argue that their recorded history (while spotty) goes back upwards of 6,000 years ago.

Interesting question!

Ever since women figured out that some plants seemed to induce miscarriages. Basically, then, forever. Birth control as a whole has been a concern for our entire span as a species, because sometimes a woman just isn't able to care for a child. Some societies rely on things like herbal remedies, others leave newborns in the wilderness. It's never easy, and we're lucky that we don't have to risk death or disfigurement like those who came before.
