No, they can't. That's also why there are always so many of them on stage. They also can not fight their own battles, so they get their friends to rap on their songs about how hard they are.

Becouse most of them are awful dancers so they figure if everyone is paying attention to the backup dancers they wont notice how awful they are at keeping the beat. One great example is Sean Paul(I know he isnt hip hop, but he is the best example). He has great songs, but man he cant dance!!!

i like the back up dancer thing because it's pleasing to the eye to see dancers doing the same steps, that's what hip hop dance is. But i have to say hip hop artists just don't dance these days. I wanna see a mc hammer and vanilla ice again, just with a litte better songs.

I think that most artists with back up dancers have all those dancers to take attention away from the lack of intriguing lyrics, melodies, and so on.

Backup dancers can make the songs look more funny and more intersting.

They get tired of the routine. Most artists can't shine on their own unless the lyrics are explicit.
