I am taking a cruise to cozumel mexico, and was wondering if you can bring your own snorkeling gear and go to a place that is nice to snorkel. If so, does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, are there any nice beaches around that aren't really crowded? I just want to do something fun without paying a lot of money. Thanks!

Yes, you can bring your own gear. One full bag we take with us is all snorkeling gear. Just remember to wash it thoroughly after you are done so you don't have the saltwater ruin your gear... My kids found out the hard way - Teenagers!

The place Eskew is talking about is El Cid La Ceiba. If you dock at the southern pier (which I believe most ships do) it is just north, like 100 yard. The plane is pretty cool, but between there and the pier is a sunken pier! I heard it was hit by a cruis ship, so there is a giant chunk of concrete in about 25 feet of water that you can walk on and be in about 1 foot of water.

I would skip Carlos and Charlies... too tourista for me. But about a mile north is Ernesto's Fajita Factory. Some of the best fajitas and cevice anywhere.

Other than El Cid, I recommend Chankanaab. It is a national park south of the pier. They have a tour of real and replica ruins, a lagoon, restaurants & a beach. There are even statues in the water you can look for! It's not too pricey either.

Have fun!

yes you can bring your own snorkeling gear with you and there is a cool place to snorkle right infront of the paracebo resort i dont think thats spelled correctly anyways theres a plane in about 20 feet of water and another cool wreck there too. also go snorkle at night and turn off your flashlight. its like a laser light show with all the bioluminescence plus you see more critters and things at night. OH i almost forgot you HAVE TO goto the bar and grill called Carlos' and Charlies. it is the best bar on the island and they have some of the best food aswell. you cant visit cozumel without going to this bar man seriously. theres also some really great myan ruins on the island but if your into that sort of thing then you should just go to chicinitza again the spelling is wrong but its pronounced Chicken-eats-ah we were calling it chicken pizza because were yankee's i think thats all i can think of right now besides market square thats a very cool spot to watch some local artist ply there trade. the guys with the spray paint is great i bought about nine of his paintings anyways thats about all i can recomend for now. also dont drink the water or you'll p!ss blood out your A55 for a week. have fun

Yes, for a couple of reasons. First, most snorkeling excursions do furnish equipment, but I don't want to use a mouthpiece that I have no idea if anyone disinfected since the last user. Secondly, my snorkel has a splash guard on it so sea water doesn't fill up the tube and my mask fits me just right. The rental equipment does not have those advantages. Thirdly, I can go a lot of places that do not have guided tours with rental equipment, thus saving money. If the swim fins don't fit, then you could leave those at home, but I prefer mine because they fit really well.
