Its for headset and harddisk I think

Depends on the software. Most games use it either for headsets, microphones; a few games support mice or keyboards. Gran Turismo 4 can save screenshots to a thumb drive attached to the port, but that function is limited to that game. The EyeToy camera uses it, as do some cheating utilties like the Action Replay, which can store and read codes from a USB thumb drive. Some gray-market items can also use the USB ports to add a hard disk drive for reading data or emulating a hard drive-equipped older PS2 on the newer slim models.

It's worth noting that the USB ports are USB 1.1 - not the higher-speed USB 2 - even on the slim PS2s.

one reason is that some games like socom can use a headset to command troops. and it gets plugged in to the usb port

like he said a headset or you can hook a keyboard up to play final fantasy 12 but it is mainly for accessories only.. you can put a modchip in it to make it recognize a storage device from the port though...
