it is all a matter of bulls-hitting idiots on the jury. hell, i am so good at negotiations that I can get large corporations to pay more to settle the case than a jury verdict

For a person to bring a successful suit for libel, the libelous statements must have caused harm such as financial loss and it is on these losses that any damages will be calculated. However, the First Amendment guarantees free speech making libel suits expensive and difficult.

It's dependent upon what damage was caused. What did the person who was harmed by the slander lose because of it? The more hurtful, the more money.
