She's 28 and I do do like her so much. However, it is the most awkward thing to ask. Pop some suggestions please on how to ask someone in a nice way.

Short of asking her outright (which, as you say, might complicate matters), you could talk about a gay friend or relative of yours. That way, if she's gay she could see in a non-threatening way how you feel about gay people.

ask her if she ever had a long relationship and if she is proud of bein gay she will tell u about it

watch her reaction. and listen to what she says.
