Its all based on games. What type of games and the quality of games, everything else is just fancy talk really.
Out of what you have on the list I could pick all of them at different times though.
PS2: Great single player library and even though load times are sometimes an issue this is the best you are gonna get in terms of price and games out if you don't have already I'd pick one up.
PS3: Right now, its just an investment, but the graphics are nice and in time I'm sure the quality of games will increase, but really not worth it at the moment.
Gamecube: IMO the best multi-player system before Wii, and cheap too. Has quite a few rare gems that are good for single playing and a good selection of multi-player games for those who have fellow gaming friends
DS: Innovative and fun for quick playing. For quirky and unique game like Trauma Center, Pheonix Wright, Nintendogs, and Brain Age, as well as pretty good standard games, its the best choice if you want something different.
Wii: Much like the PS3 it needs time to grow, but I can see that this system is like a cross between Gamecube and DS with innovation and multi-player. Don't really have to jump the gun and get one because the games are very short term playing right now (except Zelda, which is the best reason to get it right now). This is the system you want though if you want to make videogames as universal as a board game for the family.
Xbox 360: A pretty good machine right now with a better selection that PS3 and online playing and standard type games (FPS, sports, and whatnot) , but unless you really need those better graphics and online play, the PS2 is a better choice right now. The potential just like all the other next gen systems is there though.
In the end its all about your own preference, but personally I'd choose all of them if I had the cash.

I am a fan of the original nintendo and super nintendo. A sturdy system that has been through hell the last 20 or so years and still plays great. lol..
For now I would say the 360 or ps3 because they are marketed more toward adults. The Wii or Gamecube for fun or children

Nintendo Wii
unless you are a "hard core" gamer or want First Person Shooters
than go for the 360
The 360 has very good graphics
the PS3 is just WAY too expensive (although the graphics are amazing)
the Wii has a lot of innovative games

The Xbox 360 because it is better than any of the systems you listed except for possibly the Wii. It depends on your style of gaming. However, the Xbox 360 second version may release soon and if it is the same price, or just a bit more expensive, then it would be more worthy of your cash because it is supposed to boats a 120gb hard-drive, improved cooling system, and built in hd output thing or something.

i stick to pc gaming for many reasons. to start the pc is faster and has same if not WAAAAY better graphics than consoles. and also any game that comes out for a console, even the newest consoles, u can get for the pc. and my favorite reason of all is pc's are MUCH MORE RELIABLE on life span than game consoles, every time i buy a BRAND NEW machine they always brake within months of purchase. after hundreds and hundreds of dollars wasted on consoles i said screw this wasted money and stuck with pc gaming and since i did that i have NOT BEEN dissapointed or been any happier as a gamer.

well that depends... me i chose the PSP because i needed an mp3 player and i like the video... and the internet is fun.. and i like playing games on the go... and you dont have to plug all that stuff in.... but if you want a home system id go for Xbox 360 or WII because the Xbox has nice games and nice graphics and you dont have to pay 600 dollars for it... and the wii is nice because of the motion sensing.. which makes playing games very fun!!
hope that helps

PS3 is for the hot blooded as it supports the best graphics, the best resolution yet and ofcourse it is of Sony.
PS2 is still good but with the technology upgrades in other consoles, it is only for monetary considerations that one would go for it.
Gamecube............is it still alive.....hehhe
Wii is for the leisure gamer or the child in da house...not recommended for harcore gaming fanatics.
XBOX 360 is worthy of being in acquistion till PS3 becomes widely available.
