Don't make up an excuse at all. tell your work the truth and just say that you need a break. Trust me. They'll understand

Just call in and tell them you have the flu and you feel horrible. That is usually enough, unless you use it too often. If you make up some crazy, unheard-of tropical disease or situation, odds are you will raise suspicion.
My advice: go to work when you are sick, and take a day off when you are feeling good!

Migraine headaches. But for me it is a real excuse because I've been getting migraines since I was 10.
