The only truly scientifically correct answer is that nobody has any real clue as to what a dream really is. We do know when dreams happen (during REM sleep). We have some idea why dreams happen (the most popular theory is that it is a sort of brain "defragmentation" -- a kind of relaxing of all rules of reality and consciousness and ordering and cleaning up of all the junk our brains filtered out for us while we were awake). But what IS a dream? THAT, nobody really knows. Many people think it is just garbage. Some think it is a psychic message. Some claim it as a religious revelation. Some say it is a guide to our own personalities -- our fears, hopes, aspirations, etc. Every group can find support for its own theory. But no group can find support to discredit every other theory. So, basically, nobody really has any clue as to what a dream actually is.

I'm not a scientist, so I can't give a technically scientific answer to this answer. I do, however, believe that dreams play a very important role in our psyche. All dreams have meaning.

Have you ever read Carl Jung's theories on dreams? If not, I highly recommend you do. He has some pretty interesting theories.
