Not at all if you ask nicely. Servers in asian resteraunts understand that everyone cannot use chopsticks. I'm sure they take no offense. They are probably glad you asked, as they would rather you be happy and enjoy your food, rather then get mad and frustrated with chopsticks..

Assuming that this resturant is in Aust..... asking and using cutlery is better than using nothing at all and making a mess!
I cant use chopsticks either but I do know that 'training chopsticks' are available to buy..... so take your own if you feel uncomfortable is asking for a fork.

Certainly not, if you are unable to handle the cutlery provided it would be far more polite to ask for cutlery you can use rather than making a mess

Absolutely not! I lived in Asia for 4 years and I have to say that mostly the Asians use spoon and fork at restaurants. Chinese will quite often use chopsticks as will Japanese, but as for the cuisine in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore etc....spoon and fork!

It's not impolite, just weird.
It's like going to a European restuarant and asking for chopsticks;they'll probably have some, just no one ever asks.
