If its so offensive and inappropriate why do they put it on the radio stations, why do they have it on our tv's if its so darn offensive and inappropriate...because it sells? so does playboy, and ggw..and yes youre right hugh hefner and ggw guy dont call their women bitches and hoes, but does it matter? does exploitation have to be spelled out for you? No rapper owns any radio station or tv station..so dont blame those making the music, blame those making it so easily accessible!! Blame Society not Blacks...sick of this crap

This is absolutely ridiculous! Wrong is wrong..and "Slow to Anger" what the hek is playboy for anyway? what the hek are those ggw videos for anyway? for men to jerk off to them! you dont have to call the bitches or hoes..words mean nothing, its the act that should disgust people..and i cant help but think with all the defense for hugh and ggw guy, that this is a race issue...america is the biggest hypocrit that ever existed, and so are americans!! there is no valid defense for hugh or ggw..im not excusing rappers, but why do they, rather why do blacks catch all the doggone flack for the same exact things whites do? why?

exploitation has nothing to do with whether youre paid or not...i cant believe the hypocrisy and unwillingness to see the error of their own ways. is it just evil, or hate? or both?

"GIVELIFE"...rappers or blacks arent the cause of americas problems..in the case of rap, rappers dont create life and give it to you in a rhyme form, they are the story tellers of life...its art imitating life not the other way around. None of the rappers out there are the creators of the words they use, they mustve gotten them from somewhere. its the world we live in and not just blacks or rappers. dont attack the messenger, find a way to fix the problem. too much finger pointing and not enough people working to solve the problem. and if you love Tupac like you say, then you should know that what he was saying was the women that he encounters are bitches and hoes...not all women...no rapper has ever said all women are bitches and hoes..and why didnt you touch on the hugh heffner ggw guy issue..see my point...i never do hear anyone say anything about what whites do that degrade and objectify women...to society heff is a man to be admired...bs bs bs anyway you slice it!!!!

well like someone said they like to do it a lil more clssier but it is all the same to me, it is all degrading. as i have said this before the media and the government shows and says what they think of each race. they want to give black peoeple and hispanics the worst reputation so all we see is negative things about those races. i mean if u keep on seeing something u are gonna believe it. they want to make white people look great and superior, so they show only the positive things about white people and it has worked for hundreds of years, but people are getting smarter, they dont only listen to the media, they are starting to do their own research about things. i must say white people in general are smart i mean to think up this plan took time and like i said it has worked. obviously it isnt that bad if they show it own mtv and vh1, but like i said they wanna show us in bad light so they keep showing it regardless of how they feel
if u ask me the girls who get naked in front of the camera are prostitutes basically.
remeber sex sells nowadays

Personally I think it's because people often hear the lyrics but not the story behind the lyrics if you only hear the lyrics it's understandable that you might think it's degrading to women or that it's responsible for people committing acts of violence and that's true but only because those people listened to the words not the story and true meaning of it. I too sometimes have trouble understanding the story behind the lyrics but I am not into rap as much as other people my age are so I am not at risk of doing bad things as a result of the misunderstanding.
Another reason is that people will often blame the things that go wrong on what's popular at the time wither it be rap music or video games or whatever don't take it personally if your a fan of these things it's just that the people that are complaining about it are often looking for a escape goat or something to blame other then themselves or that they can't find the real cause of the problem so they blame that.

Oh, believe me, I ***** about the Girls Gone Wild jerks more than about rappers, any day. Freakin' exploitative d!cks. "Oh, have another drink, then lift your top!" Whatever. The only reason it isn't rape is there's a tv between the women and the guys at home jerking off.
Actually, the only reason rappers bother me is because there aren't too many alternatives in the rap scene to the whole "bitches and hos" thing. Okay, wait, them calling women "bitches and hos" is also a problem. Look, you can treat women as sex objects if you want, because women treat men the same way. The problem comes when the only option for women is sex object, which is what you're getting with rappers. You also get that with Playboy, but that's the _point_ of Playboy, and the magazine doesn't assume that women are only good as pinups. If there were more women rappers, or more men rappers who didn't automatically go into the sexist pimp place, I don't think there'd be as much of a problem.

That is a great point.
Being Asian and hopefully from a more objective point of view the only difference that I would personally see is that Playboy and Girls Gone Wild are more difficult to access than rap videos. Rap videos are pretty mainstream nowadays and kids watching TRL or 106 & Park can readily access them. If Girls Gone Wild were on NBC, I'm sure similar scrutiny would be placed on it as rap videos.
I don't personally believe this is an issue of race, if John Mayer had video vixens in his videos I would be willing to bet there would be a similar response.
However, this is really interesting so if you want to talk about it more, feel free to contact me.

I think for the most part you're right, it IS a double standard. Those that "complain" about it are threatened by rap music and hip hop culture. To me, even bringing up the "objectification" thing, (or violence, or materialism, etc.) when it is so prevalent THROUGHOUT our culture is hypocritical. They criticize the "bling" thing, but Donald Trump is some kind of business "role model?" Our entire culture is SATURATED with violence, but rap music is what causes inner city violence? (not poverty?)
EDIT--You make a good point too, that rappers, like all musicians and artists, are the commentators of our life and culture, they hold aspects of our society (that already exist) to a magnifying glass, they do not "create" those societies and those cultural norms, (though they, like all artists, can influence them). In that sense I would say rap is a valid form of social criticism, it IS art. "Playboy" and "GGW" are only empty titillation, and therefore much more exploitative.

Girls Gone Wild and Playboy/Penthouse don't have nearly as wide an impact as rap and popular music do, so people don't make as big of a fuss. You have to be actively seeking degradation to women to see a GGG video or the pages of a dirty magazine, but to hear the inappropriate and offensive lyrics in a rap song, one has only to turn on one's radio. That's why people make a bigger deal about rap.
EDIT:
No one cares about the fact that the people who are making rap are black. The fact that most rap music is made by black men is not what makes it degrading to women.

People do complain about Hugh, and the Girls Gone Wild. When music, or movies, or whatever call women Ho's and Bitches and only talks about using them for sex and getting your rocks off, it is an indictment on the music.
Hugh never refered to women they way Rap artist do. Girls Gone Wild is just as vile and repulsive as the music that degrades women.

I am a 24 year old female, and I love hip hop music, however as I have gotten older, my tastes have changed. I have noticed how disrespectful majority of it is. I started noticing it more (and this is what started changing my views) when my boyfriend would rap either with them, or do his own. I realized it coming out of his mouth how totally offensive it is. When I was younger, I had the mentality of I don't carry myself that way, I carry myself as a lady, then men won't put me in the category of these women in the rap songs. But, the reality is that most men lump all women together as such. It is perceived as ok to be a player, and to use and abuse women and to call them whatever you want. How many rappers claim to have a wife, a girlfriend, and a h*e. It is wrong and most men (especially the younger ones) grow up thinking it is ok. Like I said, I have always been a hip hop fan (I LOVE Tupac) However, it is getting out of hand. Not to mention some of the female rappers who put themselves in a bad light. Rap is not what is wrong with society, everyone has a right to free speech, but I think they should be more cautious as to what they put out there, especially since now it is so commercial and more and more kids want to emulate them. They need to think would they want someone talking about their sister, mother , or daughter in that light.

I'm not so much concerned with the fact that they degrade women; I get annoyed by the individualistic attitude that rap carries. To be fair, I can also say that there are plenty of non-rap artists that carry the same messages (Kid Rock for example). I hate their music as well.

Disrespect towards women is still disrespect, in all forms. I don't control the media. Rich, white men do. Woman-bashing sells. I don't know why but it does and I think it's disgusting no matter which way you dress it up. Forget about the source, pay attention to the message.
