you give them your paypal address

for example, to pay me, someone would send the money to my email address on paypal - the person that is paying doesn't need to have a paypal account, it can be paid by a credit card

They shouldn't unless you give it to them, like if you're the seller on Ebay where you need to give out pay pal e-mail so the winner knows where to send the money. Or if you transfer money to them, then PayPal gives them your e-mail address.

But otherwise, they shouldn't know. Watch out for fake e-mails pretending to be from PayPal asking you for your account and password. I got several of them, but I knew it was fake because I didn't have an account for that e-mail address.

People don't need a PayPal account to know your PayPal account if you post it publicly.
