It means Faithful Friend, as used in The Lone Ranger. That was the term his Indian companion, Tonto, called the Lone Ranger.
However, the word has more then one meaning. It apparently comes from the Ojibwe or Potawatami (which are Algonquin languages) and has been explained as 'scout' or 'spy' or 'masked man'. The Ojibwe have the word "giimoozaabi.", which can mean 'He Looks in Secret' or 'A Secret Looker'
Jim Jewell, who was the director of The Lone Ranger radio show from 1933 said he got the word Kemosabe from a Boys Camp in Michigan. It was called Camp Kee-Mo-Sah-Bee, which was explained to him as "trusty scout". The guy that founded the camp had several Native Americans working for him, and there were some Patowatami there, so there seems to be some basis for this explanation.

The Lone Ranger was called Kimosabi or Keemosawbee or maybe Q'imoSabe-- whatever-- by his sidekick Tonto....it was a mysterious Hollywood Indian term but is thought to mean something like "You Stupid White Jerk with the Halloween Mask On"

Have you heard of the Lone Ranger--an old Saturday morning western. His sidekick was Tonto. Tonto called the Lone Ranger keemosabee or however you spell it. My favorite Lone Ranger joke: The Lone Ranger and Tonto were out in the country side when they began being chased by a hugh tribe of Indians. The Lone Ranger said,"Tonto, we've got to get out of here." And Tonto said, "What you mean we, keemosabee?"
I thought that joke was appropriate for always sending Tonto to town.

Actually, Tonto knew the true meaning of it.It really means "kiss my ***".In real life, the guy who played the lone ranger always made fun of Tonto, so Tonto started saying this, because he knew no white people would know the true meaning.

Tonto referred to the Lone Ranger as Kemo Sabe, which supposedly meant "friend". An interesting sidenote, "Tonto" means "fool" in Spanish, and according to a Mexican secretary of my father's, in her dialect, Kemo Sabe means "son of a b***h." She and her little sister would sit in front of the TV watching "The Lone Ranger" and just laugh.
