I'm guessing just to be sure...
It's kind of like why does superman take a bullet but dodges when someone throws a gun at him?

Because Superman genuinely cares for this planet and its people, goodness knows why. It would appall him to carelessly damage, destroy, or kill something by crashing into it. After all, it would be like hitting a piece of flying steel/diamond/transparent aluminum, right? Birds would be mangled, power lines ripped down, microwave towers knocked sprawling - and how many times hasn't he demonstrated that he's stronger than a jet engine?
And although he has X-ray vision, that means to utilize it he needs to be looking in the correct direction - it doesn't radiate from the top of his skull... :)
