You don't even have any bank or credit card statements going back a year?

Okay, the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition is probably a matter of thousands of dollars, so if you have to pony up a few bucks to save thousands, I'd suggest doing it. To that end, if I were you I would give CarFax.com a try. For a one-time credit or debit card charge of $24.99 (or $19.99 if you're sure you'll get it right the first time), you can order unlimited vehicle history reports for up to 30 days.

This will allow you to enter the 17-digit VIN (vehicle identification number) of your car (most easily located by standing outside the driver side and looking down through the front window at your dashboard) and access a vehicle history report. What this will show is the last time your car was registered in a state or transferred ownership. Specifically, it will show the most recent title number associated with that registration. You can either print off the report and bring it to your registrar, or you can attempt to call the state or your insurance company first thing in the morning and plead that some sort of verification be faxed to your school.

It's not a perfect idea, but if you can't do any better between now and tomorrow morning, it's worth a shot. Just be sure to pick a sympathetic-looking representative at your registrar's office, because often you'll get different responses from different people, even if the institutional policy is supposedly clear. Be honest, competent, and demonstrate a good-faith effort, and you are much more likely to get by with what you have or even get an extension.

What NOT to do? Do NOT come with a list of excuses, no matter how tempting it may seem. Unless you are a skilled huckster and manipulator, it's likely to turn off any good will from the person who would be helping you. That's not to say that looking a little glassy-eyed and having a little quiver isn't a bad idea. :-)

In the worst-case scenario that you are denied, take solace in the fact that (1) you'll get things fixed by next semester, (2) you WILL eventually get everything paid off, even if it seems like way too much right now, and (3) financial aid is plentiful and college payments are easily deferred.

Other than that, good luck and God speed!

Show up at the registrar's office with a check for in-state tuition. Tell them that you will be able to provide the documentation at a future time (figure that out before you get there). Ask for an extension.
