I took my '96 Monte Carlo to the shop&mechanic there said my trans. is "gone". I would either have to replace it or have it rebuilt($1,400.)-but you can still drive it. How can I tell FOR SURE that this one cannot be fixed? Any prob with this car costs mega $ and I dont want to pour a whole lot more than I have into it. ANY help would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

Did you go in for a transmission problem ?? I would be suspicious of someone that told me I needed my transmission rebuilt, but I could still drive it. Does the fluid appear very, very dark and smell burnt ?? If it drives ok, wait till it goes. REMEMBER THIS; no shop makes the really big $ just adjusting your transmission, the $ is in the rebuild.

A true sign for a trans. going out is a burned smell to the trans. fluid.
This is a good test for buying a used car but some slick people get the transmission serviced before selling.

If you can still drive it, get a few more opinions from mechanics.

Check all vacuum lines to make sure that all lines are not cracked(repair or replace if cracked).Sometimes thats all it is.
