pick one particular person in the twentieth century who made a difference in the 20th century.

start with his childhood, through his adulthood and his or her accomplishments. also, include what inspired him or her or what contribute to this person's attitudes...what made that person become an inspiration.... what particular aspect of his childhood moulded him to be the person he became.

an example would be the life of ghandi. start by telling your reader the situation in india that prevailed when he was born and growing up. then talk about what incidents contributed to his way of thinking.....until he became the person history has known.

at the end, talk about all the things he accomplished and what these things did even for today's india. how even today, his inspiration continues.

there are other people you can use:
sister theresa,
general rommel (known as the desert fox)
pope john paul II,
eleanor roosevelt,
franklin d. roosevelt,
elvis presley,
martin luther king,
winston churchill,
mao tze tung,
albert einstein,
pablo picasso,
charlie chaplin,
edward the duke of windsor (abdicated his throne for the love of an american commoner),
general patton,
sir lawrence olivier,
laurence of arabia,
babe ruth (known as the little bambino),
muhammed ali (former name was cassius clay),
the wright brothers,
susan b. anthony,
john steinbeck,
thomas edison (known as the wizard of menlo park),
cecil b. de mille,
resident kennedy and his wife (the story of the american camelot),
president nixon (watergate),
gerald ford (who just passed away),
emperor hirohito,
general yamashita tomoyuke (the tiger of malayia) and what happened to the gold the whole world is still looking for, generalismo franco,
fidel castro (this would be super interesting!), etc.

just concentrate on one person in the 20th century and what was accomplished or what they did that changed the world at that time. this can be both positive or it can be negative, such as poeple like hitler, idi amin, president marcos, etc.

People never get tired talkin about the sixties.
What caused it. How the sixties affect us today
Lots and lots of stuff about about WW2
Hitler, Japanese internment, dropping the a-bomb, etc. etc.etc.
Maybe you can look at the big picture. People who lived in 1900 had more in common with people at the time of Christ than they do with us today. Moreover, each and every decade brought greater changes than centuries did prior to the 20th century (the 20's were roaring, the 30's were depressed, the 40's were war etc.)

What do you like, or like to do? Write about what you know and love. There is also a great deal to write about in the 20th century. There has been a lot going on in the last one-hundred years.

Invention of the lightbulb. It has more info than u would think. Or do invention of the stethoscope, that one is pretty cool. Or, since it is and extended essay, do it on inventions in the 20th century that helped shape the present.

Suburban sprawl would be a good topic, because there are so many aspects and ramifications of it (i.e. land use and loss of open space, traffic congestion, water runoff, a myriad of social implications, long-term sustainability, etc.) There are a lot of good sources for information too (American Planning Association journals, newspapers, books, etc.).
