Sorry guys this is the lasat question that I am stuck on the rest of are done. I hate to ask for help but here it goes.

One number is 12 more than another. The sum of the smaller number and twice the larger number is 39. Find the larger number.

Heres how to do this...
Make variables that go where every time (a number pops up)

One number is 12 more than another:
x = y +12
so: y= x-12(you want to find x)
The sum of the smaller number and twice the larger number is 39:
y+2x=39

Then substitute in the equation ( y= x-12) in and solve for x
x-12+2x=39
3x-12=39
3x=51
x=17(larger number)

x + 2(12 +x) = 39

the formula is derived because

x = one number

other number is x + 12

twice the larger number is 2 (12 + x)

therefore x + 2x + 24 = 39
3 x = 39 - 24

3 x = 15

x = 5
Therefore the other number is 5 + 12 = 17

so numbers are 5 and 17
