Many children discover them much younger, and find that they bring good feelings when manipulated. It's part of body discovery.
It doesn't mean anything bad about you, nor did you transfer from one "vice" to another. It's basically more likely the first time you actually remember doing it rather than the real first time you did.
People go through stages - you may have discovered them earler, then stopped, then rediscovered - etc.
All perfectly normal.

We touch ourselves from infancy because we realize it feels nice. There is nothing abnormal or wrong with this. But some people have made something innocent into something shameful to the point people are afraid of their own bodies. I recall my daughter being under age 2 and reaching into her diaper just to scratch and my grandmother had a hissy fit! She screamed "NO!!!!!" so loud that my daughter fell to the floor and began to cry. I just glared at her, picked up my child and left the room. I suspect that you became aware of what you were doing at age 6 but you had done this from an earlier age. It is perfectly normal.

No- I really don't think any age is too young, so long as it's something the person discovers on his/her own and is educated about to do discreetly, for safety reasons. I think I started about fourth or fifth grade, and have been happily doing it ever since!

not at all. who's to say the correct age to discover yourself?
in all honesty, many adults find the 's' word taboo when it comes to children. unfortunately, this kind of thought process only allows the child to continue their curiousities in their own way. once discovering it is wrong, well because of the world's way of rearing children, they grow up confused and with self-image problems - self-indignancies, and of course ridicule because they were too afraid to ask.
honestly though, i applaud the world's attempt to protect children, but if they ask, don't hesitate to inform them correctly. teach them that what they are doing is not wrong, but they should try to teach the child it's not really necessary to learn that part of their bodies yet. sounds a bit contradictory, yes, but hey .. that's the way it is.
good luck and i hope this helps

It seems normal to me. I'm sure I was aware of my own body that early if not earlier. And I figured it out all on my own too. My parents caught me a few times, but it only amounted to a slap on the wrists or less and I learned what doors were for (privacy).

Its probably very natural and dependent on the person.
I guess from point of view of the parent, you just teach your kid about privacy.
Kids know about these parts quite young and the giggle gigge.
They don't "understand" in the post puberty way. They are not to my knowledge doing the same thing as some one does after puberty.

If you talk to the people who do ultrasounds on foetuses to see if they're ok will tell you that even that early people "play with themselves".
Also most psychologists who specialize in children will tell you nowadays that it's normal and natural for very young children to essentially play with themselves (much younger than 6). Most people say to tell the child that it's perfectly natural but not to do these things in public >_<.

everybody will discover things at different ages.. i didn't start masturbating til i was around 10 or 11.. i don't even remember the first time i did it, but i just started humping my bed.. didn't even know what i was doing or why.. years later, i finally leared about the term masturbating and ejaculating etc.. guess it's just a natural instinct.. i didn't even discover what masturbating with my hand was all about til many years later.. but yah, guess it's just a natural progression of the maturing process of human beings..

We actually discover our body earlier than that. But most people can't remember back that far. I did do that, but not till age 9.
