Who cares how big you are. I realize you might be awkward right now(I have been large too), but if you love dancing dance at home. Contact your local college, or university. If you live in an urban area you might also have dance schools where you can get lessons(maybe even private ones). If you've had dance lessons before you should pick up pretty quickly. I love to dance and have had dance classes in college were I weighed more than I do now. Dancing might also help you loose that extra weight. Go for it.

Listen, I'm 5'6", and around 130-145 pounds. I know the feeling of being too fat. But honestly, just do it. That's the one thing I'm scared of doing, since I'm taking classes again from my old school, and from what I remember those girls are sticks.
But don't worry! Dancing is a GREAT exercise, and you're sure to gain a lot from it- and lose a lot! It's one of the best heart-pumping activities out there, and you use more muscles than a football player in ballet. You'll most likely get a lot more fit. Just know that you're there to learn, and to do what you want to do, not model yourself. You're beautiful. You can do this.
I also had a similar problem with finding somewhere to take classes! Do you live near where you used to take them? What I did was look on mapquest, and I even tried yahoo. I found two other nearby studios other than my old one.

Be confident. There is nothing more amazing than confidence. If you're sure of yourself and do your best, than that will shine brighter than anyone with a "perfect body". Have a dream, and go for it, and don't let anyone or anything stop you, especially yourself.

Good luck, and HAVE FUN! =D!

Think about dancing as a divine activity, not about a way to earn money, a way to worship your body and keep it in optimal health!

Dancing might not have been cool then to a select group of nimrods, but where are they now? Eating crispy cremes byt he dozen? Why do people eat them, they are plasticy! I digress.

As a Belly Dance Instructor, I'd say Belly dancing is the place to go to get your body strong and you communicating with it and loving it again. Shimmying does help you lose wieht around the hips and shape them beautifully.

In Belly Dance, it's easier with a little weight, there's more to shake, harder for thinner women.

Re: the wieght, there is a reason you feel you have to protect yourself, find out what that is an elminate it, you'll find the weight will fall off when you find the anwser and start to reclaim your life, and start to dance and celebrate life.

Check on the net in your area. Can't direct you to classes without knowing where you are. There are lots of reputable teachers. I am in Toronto, if you are anywhere near. Please feel free to write if you desire.

Find a dance studio near you. Use a search engine, just enter the dance style that you like and the name of the town, see what come up. Don't worry about being overweight, just do it.

If you specified what style you like or where do you live people might have more concrete suggestions.

If you like acting you might consider Ballet, Modern and jazz to be useful to your career. I love Ballroom and Latin. Salsa, too, is a lot of fun. You can find a studio near you using http://www.ballroomdancers.com These style are probably less relevant as they are. Ballet and Modern is probably the best, but any dancing is good.

Call your local junior college or local chamber of commerce, they should be able to point you in the right direction.

By the way, I found belly dance classes at my local recreation center. And all the women there are heavy and its ok!!!

Good luck!!
