Here's the thing. I have a profound hearing loss from life long ear infections and improper treatment.
I know sign language. I use it for jury duty and important things (I depend on sign and lipreading) but I dont use it in normal every day life. Why? Because while I can sign fairly well, when I read someone signing back to me in casual conversation I freeze up, panic and cant understand a single word they sign.
I cant hear well enough to deal with hearing people..I cant hear anything under 70 db.
I am a hermit and so miserable. What am I to do?

my heart goes out to you. i would suggest going to a group support, called SHHH self help for the hard of hearing. and then i would suggest that you be honest with yourself about why you arent being social if it really is the trouble of reading another person, im sure if you explain to someone they will help you. you gotta learn to relax and open your mind. seek professional help too.
i am hard of hearing and i do both worlds too. i know its not easy sometimes best of luck
