Salaries for LPN's and RN's vary greatly in different parts of the country. It is definetly not worth going to school to be an LPN as the job opportunites for them are very limited. The salaries the other answerer stated may be accurate for California, but are very high for other places. I just retired as a n R. N. with 31 years of critical care experience and I was making $28.00 an hour in Colorado. You need to check on salaries in your own location. Call human resources at local hospitals and tell them you are doing career research and ask staritng base range for nurses. Parts of the country that pay higher salaries usually also have higher cost of living , so it evens out.

Honey, an LPN or "half nurse" as they are known, make about $15 per hour depending on where they work. An RN makes about $24 to start. The way I see it, if you are going to be a nurse you might as well go all the way and remain employable for life. As an LPN you are not very secure and will be one of the first to be cut along with the budget.
Happy studying,

I would highly recommend pursuing a career as an RN. You will make a significantly higher income and also have more job options. I've been an RN for 10 years now and my base pay is $90,000 - that's as a critical care nurse. LPN's are not allowed to work in higher care areas - ICU/PACU/OR - so, consider where you want to be down the road.

I believe it's between $15.00 to $20.00 per hour for an LPN depending on the care facility.
The nice thing about being a nurse is that you can always find a job, no matter what city or state you are in. Nurses are always in demand, and the demand is growing, as more immigrants come into the states, and more babies are born.
Now if we could fix our medical insurance problem, (or lack there of) in California, then it would be a win win situation for all!
Good luck with your nursing career.
