As of this weekend, it's only in 852 theaters. They should go for the jugular now since word of mouth should get more fans.

$10K from 852 theatre isn't a great average - it's good but not great. The reason it's not in more theatres is because the studio is doing a controlled roll out leading up to the Oscar nominations. From everything I've heard they plan to go wide on 1/19 which means it would be brand new in theatres when the Oscar nominations come out on Tuesday 1/23. If you look back at previous years this is a standard practice.

You should also look for expansion of The Queen, Notes on a Scandal, The Good German, The Good Shepherd, Babel, Apocalypto, Volver, Venus, and Letter from Iwo Jima.

Again, this happens every year at this time.

By the way, I am a theatre manager.

my understanding is that the movie company is releasing the movie cautiously, since it's a musical, trying to make sure that every theater is filled to capacity, instead of spreading things too thin. before christmas, there were $25 screenings in new york and L.A. with programs that made it an "event." i saw it at a free screening as they were trying to build buzz in the mainstream and as a result, have been telling everyone i know how brilliant it is. i can't wait to go again... and pay. it's that good. i think the movie company is being very deliberate because a) it's a musical and b) it's an all-black cast, which sometimes limits its overall appeal. in any case, even in limited theaters, it cracked the top 10 last week, so it's a bon fide hit! p.s. i'm in NYC, where the buzz is huge.

I honestly have no idea. I live in a moderately sized city and its only in two theaters. It may have something to do with it being perceived as a "black movie" and movies under that category generally not picked up by as many theaters. But the movie is great and well received so maybe more will pick it up.
