i wrote down on paper step by step instructions for my Mom. Very basic stuff. She's practicing but it makes her nervous. She grabs the mouse like it's going to run away! When I tell her to look for something on the screen she never "sees" it until I point it out.

Set her homepage to something like recipezaar or courtTV, that way she starts out somewhere she's interested in. The mouse thing will come with practice, but maybe she should practice that in writing emails and such before accidentally downloading some spyware. I would also suggest Mozilla Firefox instead of IE, since it easily blocks pop-ups, does suggestions as you type in searches, and the tabbed browsing makes it simple. Make sure she does have a spyware remover, too, since newbies often-times get infected by accident.

Why don't you set up a favorites list for her so that she will have sites to go to, as far as site go... Type in www.google.com and search away!
Make sure she also protects herself online and never give out your personal info unless YOU typed in your bank website and are doing an online transaction or something to that affect.
Teach her about spam, and how that is Junk mail just like the trash that somes in your own mail box. Don't open email from people you don't know or sites you haven't subscribed to... And last but not least, use it for the good of things. Reading, writing, investigating, and so on.
Be safe and good luck!

My Grandma is 87 and a computer whiz. Your Mom will get there, too. Tell her it is like driving a car: the screen is the road and the buttons are the controls. Set up an email account for her, set up some Favorites for her. The libraries and senior centers where my Gran lives offer free or low cost, slow computer classes for seniors. Check out your area.

www.recipezaar.com is a great website for cooking, where you can find most recipes from all over the world.

As for the mouse, try to get her to play freecell or solitaire. This makes for good mouse practise.

Good luck and happy surfing to her.

Yeah, keep teaching her anytime she wants ... cause she loves you and your attention to her.

She is obviously very bright ... you may be too. After all she is your mom ( or grandmother ?)

Jonnie

PS Then hook her up with cooking sites, and be available if she runs into technical troubles.

Bookmark some websites that would interest her so she can get to them easily. As she gets used to it she'll get more confident. Surf the web with her.

My mother is 80 and loves the internet.

Just keep her away from myspace lol.

There are plenty of good sites for both of the things you mentioned.

Check out crimelibrary.

Google for good cooking sites.
