While working in Japan, I had occasion to wear kimono. I was excited about it, right up until I saw what the dresser had laid out for me.

If you have any noticeable bosom at all, you wear what looks like a sleeveless straight jacket that smashes them down flat. Ow.

Over that goes a white kimono; then the real fun begins.

A cord is tied around your waist *just* to the point of pain, and the under kimono is hiked up through it about 5 inches. Then the kimono gets smoothed down, and a rigid panel is tied over it.

If you have a waist, silk-covered pads that look like sanitary napkins are strapped to your body to remove any curves.

Then the outher kimono goes on. It involves a baffling array of sashes, elastic alligator clips and weird fasteners to get it to fall properly.

The obi (the big belt) is tied on last, and it wraps around you 2 and a half times, and is tied as tightly as possible.

Meanwhile, someone has helped you put on tabi, which are somewhere between a bedroom slipper and a sock, with a split between the big toe and other toes that makes your foot look like a hoof. Your feet are then crammed into the tiniest thong sandals you ever saw. The sandals can retail for up to $800.

Horrible things are done to your hair, and, by the time they are finished with you, you couldn't bend at the waist if it was necessary to save your life. It is also impossible to eat anything, because your insides are squished flat.

And, the ensemble is such that you can't really walk; you can only mince.

I was told I had never looked so graceful in my life.

I couldn't wait to get out of the damned thing, and I had a whole evening ahead of me!

The Moral: Don't wear kimono, just admire it from afar.

Haha - this is definitely out of the norm.. That being said in a serious manner would never come out of my husbands mouth but if it did - and Im sure if would be half jokingly if he was ever serious - I would laugh and say "Ok, lets go to the room." If you know your husband loves you and treats you with respect then why get your hurt feelings hurt bc of it or look at it as degrading or disrespectful? :) Just my opinion.

I would say my top favorites are a Sari, Kimono, Hanbok. I love the vibrant colors of each.
