I'd say the best laptop for under $1000 are one of the three the Lenovo Thinkpad R50e 1842 it is 6.6 lbs, 14 inch screen has Intel Celeron M, 1.4 GHZ, 256 MB ram and 40GB HD if you want another alternative is the Dell XPS M140 more for entertainment it is 5.9 lbs 14 inch screen it has Intel Pentium M, 1.86 GHz, 512 MB RAM and 80 GB (might be a little more $) or you can always get an Apple MacBook which does not have Windows Operating System it weighs 5.3 lbs and is 13 inches it has Intel Core Duo, 2.0 GHZ, 512 MB ram and 60GB hard drive

You can buy them at best buy but you need to make sure that it charges your battery and doesn't just allow it to operate on AC power. My cat chewed through the cord on my dell charger and I bought one there. It would run the computer but not charge the battery. I used it for a week until my company IT department sent me a new one, then returned it. It was about $80. You could also order one from Dell but I bet they will charge you an arm and a leg.

Sure. or you can go to Radio Shack or check the local mall for a Dell kiosk and they should be able to tell you where to get it from. Bring your laptop with so you get the right charger.

Yup best buy has generic universal chargers that work well with dell.

Yes. Best Buy, CompUSA, or most other computer stores should have a replacement or a universal charger. They may not be cheap.

Walk into any best western, Sheraton, doubletree, etc, and ask the front desk if they have any that were left in rooms. I got free phone chargers this way!

Yes they do.... you might also try to see if anyone on campus has one that they will let you use to charge up your battery a couple of times... till you can have someone ship yours to you.

yup, but it's cost's over a $100.00. you can also get it at circuit city or any electronic store nearby.
