My baby and I were at a friend's house, and her baby grabbed my baby's favorite stuffed animal and put it immediately to her face, which was literally COVERED in snot, and now I don;t want it anywhere near him! The tag on it says "surface washable only"...what do I do? How long can germs like that live on a stuffed animal?

My suggestion is to combine a few of the answers here...
Put it in a pillowcase was in cold water, Add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse water, dry on the lowest setting and afterwards set it in a nice sunny window to finish killing anything that might be left (bonus...this also makes sure it's good and dry too!) I would however stay away from the antibacterial soaps & Lysol etc. as the "antibacterial agent" has been known to make little folks sick.
Future reference...next time I would gently, but quickly remove the stuffed toy (or anything that your son might put near his face) it eases your worries, and if the other little one's mother comments, I would explain that your little guy hasn't been feeling well, most people understand (or at least back off...LOL...just in case they get what he's got) and nobody's feelings are hurt.

My daughter has this stuffed care bear that says "surface washable only" and if you saw how nasty it got, you'd know that's not enough. So what I do is throw it in the washing maching, cold water, gentle cycle along with light clothing. It always comes out nice looking, I just don't wash it too often. Use a gentle detergent, and skip the liquid softener. If you'd like, throwing it in a pillow case to wash it is a good idea. It's worth a shot-- I'd rather have a stuffed animal slightly nappy from going through the washer than being covered in snot! Good luck...

Wipe the residual snot off best you can with a wet cloth. Then put the toy out in direct sunlight for a while... a week of bright sunlight should do it. Germs hate UV rays, and they will die when in the sun for a while.

First of all, use disenfectant to clean off what you can, then liberally soap it and wash it.
I would put it in the washer, anyway. I always washed stuffed animals - you put them in a pillowcase first, tie the end closed, and put in the washing machine with liquid detergent. Then in the dryer.

I would just wipe it down with a baby wipe. Worry about dirt that ruins things, not bacteria. It isn't even smart to try to eliminate every germ. All it does is kill stuff you do need.

we used to put are daughters fav stuffed toy in a pillow case tie a loose knot in the end then wash and dry it worked great

I would steam clean it, if you have one
If not you can usually get one at walmart for like 30 bucks.
Definitely worth it when you got kids, it disinfects everything! With out chemicals.
If you don't want to buy one throw it in the washer and dryer, even though it says not to

You can take it to a dry cleaner...(but then you have to be careful of the chemicals afterwards.) You can try the new Clorox wipes...(they say they kill germs..)
