Society is not possible without individuals. Almost every individual either has or finds a family. Anything that most individuals have in common, therefore, is an important aspect of society.

Sociologist study institutions, and peoples place and relationship to those institutions. The family is at its core the most basic institution and some could argue the basis for society.
