First off, I don't know which 360 you have, the core or the premium. If you have the premium, then you're almost set (I'll explain later further down). If you got the core, then you'll need to buy the hard drive unless you already have it. Anyway, the point is is that you need the hard drive to play XBX games.
Back to answering your question, the 360 can play some XBX games, but it can't play all XBX games. Someone already gave you a link to the backward compatible list. Go there and see if the game you want to play is listed. If it's not listed, then you can't play it on the 360. If it's listed, then you can play it on the 360, but you'll probably need the latest patch.
There's 3 ways to get the patch:
1. Get it through X-Box Live, silver or gold membership doesn't matter. If you have internet access, the 360 should ask you automatically if you want to download the latest update. Go with yes and wait for it to download.
2. Ask MS to send you a disk so you can load it to the 360.
3. Burn the update onto a CD and then upload it to the 360.
Just go to link with the list and navigate your way around until you find the link that tells you how you can get the latest patch if you don't have XBL.

The Xbox360 is very selective as to which games it will play from the orignal xbox. In short, the games must be Backwards Compatible (BC). Theres a list of BC games at this website: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm

The question has already been answered well by 2 above people noting the list of BC games, and the fact that a small download is needed to make the system ready to roll for BC gameplay.
My main point though for answering this question is to say simply. If you don't know the answer, why the hell are you people answering? One of you above "Heard" this or "Thinks" that, you don't know what your talking about, so stay the hell off the subject and let the people who A. Have a 360 and know what thier talking about, and B. Aren't just out to add a couple points to thier stupid Yahoo total. (Yeah I get the irony of this comment by me making this rant, but it needed to be done) Handle the discussion.

look at the xbox game and see if it's online enabled(it should say it on the front of the box) if it is, it will work on the xbox 360
