Basically, I am quitting Engg. to do a Physics Ph.d. because i like to learn Physics. I want to do a Ph.d.... so before I take the plunge, i wanted to know if you know of a downside to doing a Ph.d. Physics?

The downside is the amount of time it takes. Earning a Ph.D can sometimes take 7 years or more. Other than that, depending on which field you go into (based on what you want to do) there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. People with Ph.Ds in physics have a much higher average starting salary than those with Ph.Ds in other fields, and the demand for those with Ph.Ds in physics is only increasing.

Despite what many people think, you can do much more than teach with a physics Ph.D. You can work for NASA, work with engineers for creating more sophisticated computer chips (please note you'll be doing physics, not engineering, haha). The work is out there. Maybe try and set up a meeting with a physics adviser in your school. They'll be more than happy to talk to you about career opportunities!

Before you study Physics, you need to ask yourself, "What are my ultimate goals with this degree?" "Can I accomplish these goals without losing four years of my life to studying?" Every step in the educational process has an opportunity cost; not only the money you lose by not working at your peak salary, but also, the time invested in learning something that you may not enjoy or need in the future. If you "like to learn Physics," you can also read about it....why the PhD? Is there a very narrow subject scope that interests you, and where are they doing this research? Do you plan to teach? What you want to do with this degree defines what the downsides of not doing it are...

Physics is a passionating field of studies but there is not much jobs openings for physics Ph.Ds. You will end up in computer programming.

Nothing physics is awesome! I'm a Computer Science major now, but I'm changing in the future as well! Usually, physics Phd's have many other skills, in your case engineering which mesh nicely. Physics can be used in everything.

I oftentimes mistrust any "info" given from each person who claims to "understand the truth" about global Warming yet no human being who's paying interest can deny the actual incontrovertible truth that our global is warming up. it would want to be guy's activities or it would want to be the solar or it would want to connect a great cycle that we are only starting up to note of, yet inspite of the reason in incontrovertible truth that the warming sort is going to make a huge sort of people even extra depressing than they're today. even if it truly is achievable to stem the warming sort by lowering human contribution to the priority, shouldn't we attempt to finish that? even if the solar is the most important contributor to the priority we'd want to be able to off set that by regulating different factors alongside with CO2 emissions and thereby preventing or slowing down the warming sort to a %. it truly is tolerable to many of the global. shouldn't we make investments in seeing if it truly is achievable? Or might want to we proceed to bicker over which information source to have self assurance till it truly is merely too late to do something in any respect? the idea of bickering easily receives a lot extra press than the idea easily attempting to fix the priority. Denying global Warming because you do not have self assurance the source of the information is amazingly shortsighted and selfish as is the concept any unmarried source is the all-understanding-king-of-sources. You suggested the Tragedy of the Commons in a unmarried of your cutting-edge solutions today, and thinking how established you look with that idea, it truly is ironic that you do not note of that the internet has grew to change into "The Media" right into a sort of the commons. each person can unload information into the media by the internet, strong or undesirable. Esteemed scientists alongside radical bloggers-global Warming commentators alongside The Flat Earth Society, each with an opinion to precise, own delight or chilly troublesome money to assemble, and little or no punishment for doing damage. i look out my window today and note roses entering bloom and my backyard sprouting volunteer plant life leftover from very last fall and that i do not desire each person to inform me the elements is hotter than it change into even 5 years in the past.
