I was in Africa in the early seventies,Angola, e were dispatched to Zaire, to check on a catholic mission there , no comm, we discovered that the nuns and sisters worked from early morn, til late growing veggies etc, where they would distribute these edibles thru the villages, free, using their little carts pulled by them I saw fields of corn, tomatoes, beans, etc, growing and a fine crop it was , but, my understanding was there were no help to grow any of this from the villagers or anyone but, the nuns and sisters, and its sole purpose was to feed the surrounding people
but, every one on the compound was raped killed and butchered why? not many animals will bite the hand feeding it unless it is rabid and mad, the land was fertile and to me it would grow any thing, and I have seen several farms that was very very good producing farms, so it is not a fact that the land nor the lack there of that keeps them down,it to me is plain laziness, and their political system that destroys them, if some white girls who are not acclimated to the heat etc can grow such crops and other farms so productive why the hell do we need to send them food , I do admit some areas are not so nice but there are plenty of fertile land with plenty of water that could produce an abundance of food, I suppose it is easier to lay on your a...and complain and say poor me than it is to work and produce, and we see it here in the states as well, just not the percentages, but, it will be soon as welfare keeps growing,

LOL Think about what you're saying. Pfff, you think the US and Europe help Africa out of sympathy. HAHA, they do it for their own PERSONAL GAIN. You have no clue how much money the US government gets from you American citizens for so called 'charity'. I'd like to see if even 10% of that money go to actually helping the people. Second of all, Africa did not ask for your help, the only reason you want to 'help' us is because Africa happens to be very rich in minerals, diamonds..etc. And even though Africa is not as 'modern' as the western world, i honestly don't see the problem with that. African survives on what it needs, but people in the West are selfish and complain about everything. You say Africa is corrupt but just look at the US, it's because of the Americans that lead to this economic crisis.Americans have everything and they still live a miserable life, whist Africans might not have all your fancy spancy crap i can bet my *** off that they are a more loving, caring and happier nation than the west and it's MATERIALISTIC CRAP .

First of all, Africa is not the richest continent in the world in terms of natural resources. There are, actually, only a few countries there (e.g. South African Republic and Namibia - they have diamonds; Nigeria - it has oil, but that's pretty much all there is) for which their natural resources can make a big difference. The only thing that most of African nations got from the nature is a terribly hot climate that makes farming quite difficult. The other problems of African nations have been mentioned above by other posters, so I will not repeat those points over again.

First of all, Africa isn't a nation, it's a continent. And I'm not so sure it is necessarily the richest area of the world for natural resources. Some African countries are definitely poor in every way.
As for your actual question, there is a chance that the colonization by Europeans helped beat down the African nations just as they were beginning to grow to "modern" societies. At one point in time, EVERY African country except 2 were taken over and ruled by Europeans, who as a rule treated the people native to Africa as second class citizens.
Although most of the nations are decolonized officially, they are still relying on Western funding and aid.
If Western world decides to treat Africa as below them, I do not see any good coming from it. It isn't "the blacks", its the original "conquerers" of African countries that are the problem.

It's not the color of your skin, its whats in your heart.
Almost every nation in Africa is run by a bunch of crooks. They keep their people from getting good education. This is how their leaders keep them under control. We send them food and medical help, but little of this ever gets to the people. Only nations with honest elections and a free market economy truely succeed.
You will find that most of the people that come to America, from Africa, succeed in whatever they do. Once they are free, their spirit comes alive, and they live the American dream.

Biggest problem with Africa is that...during colonization by all the European powers...countries were partitioned off that included tribes which had been fighting and killing each other for hundreds of years. When the European countries gave up their African colonies (mostly after WWII), the country borders were set. A lot of African countries need to partition themselves into smaller areas.
It's real similar to what's wrong with Iraq. It should have long ago been broken up into three independent countries...one for the Kurds, one for the Shiites, and one for the Sunnis. But instead, it kept it's colonial borders...and has had internal civil wars forever.

Have you ever looked at Botswana? Correct me if I'm wrong, and I could be, but it is run by Blacks, has one the best economies in Africa, and it highly regarded among luxury tourists to Africa. Anyways I do believe it is a country successfully run by blacks.

yeah. i got an honest and backed up answer. in ancient history migration was hard because of the array of different climates. no migration=no extension of new ideas. all today's condition were because of the geographical hand different places in the world were given. for example. in many places in Africa people had to constantly focus on survival, either because edible food was scarce or the process to make food edible was hard and took long. since they had to spend so much time on survival there was no time left over for development. Africa was left in the dust and has just in the past 100 years started to catch up with the world due to the Internet, phone mass distribution. etc.
