Let x be the number of pounds of gourmet candy.

2x + 3(6) = 2.6(x+6), balanced by the total amount of money.

Solve for x,
x = 4 pounds

A costs $2 per pound
B costs $3 per pound
We need 6 pounds of B in the final mixture
So:
A pounds x $2/lb + 6 pounds x $3/lb = (A+6) lbs x $2.60/lb
Simplify
2A + 18 = 2.6A + 15.6
2.4 = .6A
4 pounds=A

Let of x pounds of candy@$2.00 be mixed wth 6 mounds of candy @$3.00 per pound to get 6+x pounds of mixed candy @$2.60
By the problem.
2x+18=2.60(6+x)
=>2x+18=15.60+2.60x
=>2x-2.60x=15.60-18
=> -0.60x=-2.40
=>x=-2.40/-0.60=4
Therefore 4 pounds of candy selling at $2.00 to be mixed

Let

k = pounds of candy selling for $2.00 / pound

(3*6 + 2k)/(6 + k) = 2.60
18 + 2k = 2.60(6 + k) = 15.60 + 2.60k
2.40 = 0.60k
2.40/0.60 = k
4 = k

The answer is 4 pounds.

you want x(2)+6(3) divided by x+6 to equal 2.60, because you are simply adding the individual values and taking the average value of the whole thing (average value is cost per pound*pounds)

Now we just manipulate the equation (x(2)+6(3))/(x+6)=2.6

(2x+18)/(x+6)=2.6

multiply both sides by x+6

2x+18=2.6x+15.6

manipulate and get -.6x=-2.4

divide by -.6 and get x=4

4 pounds :-)

X * 2.00 + 6 * 3.00 = (X+6) * 2.60

2X + 18 = 2.6X + 15.6

2.4 = 0.6X

4 pounds = X
