XP CAN BE INSTALLED ON A FAT 32 PARTITION. That is not the reason for this failure. If you are using a windows XP Pro Upgrade disc then yes, you must upgrade to home edition first. The pro upgrade disc only upgrades XP home to XP pro, NOT win 98 or even XP Media Center edition.

If this is not your problem then you may have a bad HDD. Please repost your question with more info if you are unsure.

Also min. requirements for XP are only 64mb of RAM and 233MHz processor and 5GB HDD for home edition.

First, make shure your CD is in the drive, then go to your BIOS and change the boot process to CD first, then reboot. It should load whatever is on the cd.

Since you are upgrading your OS from 98 to XP on a possibly older computer, make shure you PC is comaptible with XP first. You should have at least 256 MB of RAM and a Pentium 3 or higher processor. I did this exact same thing with my old computer and messed it up pretty bad.

98 is formatted in Fat while XP is NTFS. in laymans terms they don't speak the same language. Back up your important files then format your hard drive and install XP fresh. The upgrade can be done but it's not worth the trouble it doesn't usually go well.

Sorry you should buy a new puter that already has XP on it. Your 98 probably does not have enough space to run xp as it takes a several gigs just to run the Operating system.

An 'improve' version of homestead windows XP won't erase something out of your complicated force till you particularly ask it to. Your data and purposes are risk-free. considering's a significant improve, i might nonetheless backup issues you talk significant onto a CD-R, USB stick, or floppy. different than for that, you are able to desire to heavily evaluate paying for a clean workstation. i'm unsure how properly a working laptop or workstation that ran homestead windows ninety 8 might run homestead windows XP. i'm additionally worried that the complicated force in that workstation is nearing - or previous - its expected existence span. you are able to desire to contemplate that your modern workstation ought to die at any 2d and take your records with it.
