You people with the penny trick are simply trying to kill this person. Because so many people use your insane rule of thumb, tire manufacturers have been required by law to have on their tires what is called a "tread wear bar" that shows up as a tread running across the tire, perpendicular to the other treads, as soon as the minimum amount of tread is left. And it ain't no sixteenth of an inch, either. If this wear bar shows up, you need to replace the tire(s). If you wait for Lincoln to tell you, well, you get what you pay for. If you hit a puddle with a sixteenth of an inch of tread, you are going to get an expensive lesson in hydroplaning.

When using a tread depth gauge, tires need to have at least 1/16-in. of tread or more (this is the minimum amount of tread allowed by law). By using a penny as a quick reference, insert the penny into the tread groove with Lincoln's face showing, but with his head upside-down. If you are able to see all of Lincoln's head, the tire needs replacement. If you see a wear bar across the width of the tread while facing it, it's time to replace the tire.

Most tire manufactures mould in a wear bar or strip into the tire treads, when the tread is worn down to these bars its time to replace the tire, as any further tire wear will compromise safety. You will see them as thin strips running across the tire tread, there will be probably four of them and when showing the tire tread depth left on the tire will be about 1.6mm.

Place a penny sideways with Lincoln's head towards the tire in one of the tread grooves. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, the tire is past due for replacement.

1/16th of an inch. Take a penny, put it in between the tread of your tires with the top of Lincoln's head pointing into the tire. If the tread does not cover any portion of tje top of Lincoln's head you need new tires. Also, look for uneven wear across the tire.

this is a good rule of thumb. if you can stick a penny into the tread, and lincoln's head isn't atleast touching the top of the rubber, you need to change your tires. also, you should keep an eye out for even wear. if your tires arent wearing evenly, you can have full tread on the outside wall, but have a distended (nearly blown) wall on the inside.

Serious as can be: If you stick a penny upside down in between the tread, and if it comes up higher than the top of Abe Lincoln's head then you are okay. No joke!! Good Luck!!

the general rule of thumb is to take a penny, place it down into the tread, with the head of Lincoln pointed to the center of the wheel. if you can see the top of lincoln's head, then it's time to see about some new tires.... which reminds me.... two on the front, please!
