I had TMJ when I was younger and braces helped but after a recent neck injury my TMJ came back. My chiropractor helps take care of it when it acts up. You may want to try that. At the very least you should talk to your dentist. He or she would probably have more information about the different treatments.

TMJ disorder won't clear up on its own - the best thing you can do is talk to your dentist about it, who can correctly diagnose TMJ disorder and recommend an orthodontist or orthopod who can treat it by use of a splint (which causes the jaw to adopt a new shape through constant pressure) or other mechanism.

I also have it and my dentist recommends me to try a "Splint". Splints are like braces, too, although I don't have it yet. It helps to heal headaches, earaches, tooth aches and even your posture! That would be a big help if you would have it.

I had a splint when I was in middle school- it was a small plastic mouth piece. It stopped while I was wearing it, but I don't wear it now and it came back. So I think probably not.
