I need to be within about 30 minutes of the airport. We are also looking for a 2+ bedroom rental house (about $800/month budget) with a yard. Would like a private/quiet location if possible. Access to a park or outdoor/recreational area is a plus. We are not Mormons.

I would suggest the older part of Sandy or Midvale if you want to be about 30 minutes from the airport, for a quieter family atmosphere. The older section of Sandy would be say from 1700 East down to about State Street, no farther south than about 10000 South. Sandy has a huge range of incomes, so that is why I am being specific about addresses. You can also try north of Salt Lake City in Bountiful or Woods Cross or Layton or Kaysville or Syracuse, where the rent is probably going to be cheaper. Driving through Layton and Kaysville, I thought they seemed pretty quiet. If you're going for climbing and outdoor stuff, I assume you are planning trips to southern Utah, like Moab and Zions and St. George.

I don't live near Salt Lake City, but my brother does. He lives in Grantsville, which would be about thirty minutes away from the airport, but it's WEST of the airport -- which would be the opposite direction from the mountains, etc.

Still, if you're serious about renting a house with a yard and your budget is $800 a month, you might find a lot better neighborhood in that budget by going AWAY from Salt Lake City.

BTW, Salt Lake City is only about 50% Mormon, although Utah is 72%. so, you'll hardly be alone as a non-member. One of the reasons there are so many non-Mormons in the area is because many people have found out what you apparently already know -- that the recreation is great, and it's nice to live among the Mormon people.

Folks are moving in all the time.

I don't know anything about Salt Lake City, but I do know that Mormans are a very close knit people. You will feel like an outsider, no matter what you do. They will be polite and treat you with respect, but you will not be "one of them".
