What is the author's use of irony in the novel "All Quiet on The Western Front"?

Practically every key moment in the book is ironic:

1) the tough drill sergeant who became weak when he was sent tot he front.

2) Paul survives the war but is killed on the day of peace

3) the soldiers on both sides come together for a Christmas party, then go back to killing each other when Christmas is over.

4) no one cares that the soldiers lose their lives in battle, but the nurses and doctors won't let anyone kill himself, even the guy who has no arms or legs.
