CZ is the abbreviation for cubic zirconia, a specific type of synthetic stone made to resemble diamonds. They are a fairly old creation, and fairly inexpensive. However, they are also very easy to tell apart from an actual diamond, as they don't have the same characteristics as a diamond.
Synthetic or imitation diamonds could refer to any number of man made stones, including CZ, Moissanite, crystals, and even lab diamonds. They are both general terms, not used for any one type of stone.
Lab diamonds are by far the best synthetic diamond to buy.
1. They are the exact same compound as a mined diamond, so only a jeweler with his/her tools can tell the difference.
2. Because they are still a carbon compound, you are still wearing a diamond, not another stone made to look like a diamond. The hardness, brilliance, light refraction, etc... are still exactly the same as a mined diamond.
3. Because they were made in a controlled environment, they have no imperfections, like inclusions or poor color.
4. They cost a fraction of the price of a mined diamond, without giving up the quality of the stone for another imitation.
5. Because they were made by scientists in a lab, no workers had to suffer conditions of the mines.
6. And no one was hurt, killed, and no military group was funded in the production of the stones.

just because a jewelry store doesnt have a kimberely process certificate, does NOT mean that it is a blood diamond. ALL reputable jewelry stores and dealers get their diamonds through the kimberely process. the film Blood Diamond is largely a historical film, as in before the kimberely process. Dont buy diamonds on the black market and you will be fine.

They are just different types of fake stone. If you are going to buy a diamond ask your jewler for "The Kimberley Process Certification" if it doesn't have the cerficication I would not buy the diamond as it is a conflict diamond.
