that says "You are what you experience" OR you would rather say "Experience is what shapes people" ?? In life we know many sincere, generous, good, people who in spite of their goodness becomes victim of the most devastating situations we feel is unfair and we wonder “God why this thing has to happen to them when bad guys are enjoying good life….??” Could we still say that they're what they experience ??

i don't agree in the line you are what you experience, because people don't have control on their experiences, they just happen. but these experiences really affect what you are today. i have a story to tell you. actually, this wa my professor's story. he is a religion prof and he said to his students that everyone is a gift from God, because when God created man he looked at them and saw it was all good, that is why he said that. then a girl student of hers told her, "Can you consider my father as a gift?" confused, he told her to meet him after class, and they did. he asked her why she said that thing, and she told him that her father raped her years ago. he did not know what to answer. the next time they met he asked the girl about her and her father. she said that they are okay and she had forgiven her father. and my prof only said, "I envy you because not all can forgive like you did." the moral lesson of the story? her experience taught her to forgive even the greatest sin a father can do to a child.

There is a choice in Experience, “to heal or to kill” it is up to you to decide. This isn’t my idea; it is well know by most older adults. For example, if you had a really bad experience, you can think of it as a great lesson and use it to inspire yourself or others; or turn that experience 90 degrees and used to destroy yourself or others.

Free will still plays an important role in Experience that is why criminals need to responsible for their action. Every evil criminal used to be a cute little baby too you know, that is why eliminate capital punishment is a second chance that we as an intelligent being give it to them, because “human made mistakes”.

Well I personally agree with this saying “You are what you experience” or “experience is what shapes people” first you choose to be evil or good then the experience will shape you into that evil criminal or invincible hero. Remember “the power to heal or the power to destroy” is still in your hand. ( It took me 45 minutes to write this lol… ^_^ I like your question that is why I spend time to answer it ^_^ )

I say that I grow from the things life throws at me so I would go for the "Experience is what shapes people".
My husband died when I was 25 and I have lived through other things so I know about devastating times.

I are grateful for all my problems as I over came each one I became stronger and more able to meet those yet to come.
I grew from my difficulties, I now have the strength to help others over come theirs.
I never wish ill on to another for I believe that everyone (even the bad guys) has good inside them and I would be less then good to myself to wish bad on another.

Take it from an old soldier of vice and fortune.
When the bad guy looks like he is on a winner....it is only held together by stress, and it is temporary.
When a good person falls it is usually still a safe place to be because the good person will not harm another person on their way back up.
Life experience does chisel the grooves in the faces of the elderly.

DEFINATELY, it still shapes them and makes they what they are. When i was a kid i used to wonder why bad things always happened to me, i even went to great extents to be 'good', but i guess such situations have made me more empathetic to people in similar situations, more understanding. But i think you are probably alot more than these situations, the way you percieve and react to certain experiences depends greatly on what kind of person you where beforehand.

Experiences can help shape who we are, but they don't have to define us. What you have done is not the same as who you are.

People are what they do in the face of what they experience.
---

'I wish it need not have happened in my time,' said Frodo.

'So do I,' said Gandalf, 'and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.'

I would stay instead, "You are what you choose to become when faced with your experiences."
