Slavery was an evil institution. The United States is not the only country to have had slavery, yet we are the only country being held accountable for it. There is slavery today in third world countries, and yet no one wants to face that fact. Today it is not white people having slaves, but black countrymen in African countries. Hold those evil men accountable. If one race to to apologize throughout history for it, then all races should. I don't think it is fair for me to have to apologize for what happened 200+ years ago, I was not even born. It is time we start holding individuals responsible for what they do and not entire races. I am not the mouthpiece for the entire Caucasian race, and not all Caucasians are racist. There is as much racism that goes on every culture. If someone is black asking me to look beyond the color of their skin, I ask the same thing for me.

Societies, cultures, both are totally dynamic entities. Slavery was, at the beginning of American culture, as common as owning your own real estate. Most of the founding fathers, including Washington and Jefferson, owned slaves for example. Over time, the culture changed, as is normal. White America pretty much adapted to the changes as they came while black America was bitter, wanting what, even they didn't know. Many finally adapted and became normal American citizens while others harbor the bitterness to this day. President Lincoln essentially bought Liberia with the idea of shipping all former slaves back to their own continent where in all likelihood they would have been happier. Lincoln was killed and that didn't happen. The result is the bitterness I spoke of above. The dynamics of culture will change that in the future. We just don't know how long it will take.

In that it provided a strong drama, enacted by 2 races that had no real making in the history of the land they both were occupying, thus attempting, seemingly succesfully, to replace and or render obsolete the original unfoldment that was to take place on the said American continent.

Slavery simply proved that the world is nothing but power hungry and always wanting more. Unless we as a nation learn to accept our mistakes and learn from them, then we will truly be able to overcome the struggle sent to us by slavery and evils like it. ♥
