My personal preference is for a fraternity/sorority as they will give you exposure to teamwork in an organization, leadership skills, and networking. These are all valuable things once you graduate from college. If you are biased against these organizations, any good purpose/academic organization that has all of the above characteristics would be a nice bullet on your resume.

Aside from community service or sports, professional societies are a great extra curricular. If you are in college, there are associations for most majors that connect you with professionals working in the field and other students studying the same thing. They are a great way to learn more about the field, network, and prove to future employers that you have an interest in the field as a committed professional. The same it true in high school. Joining a group for future professionals, even if it is not the exact field you want is a way to learn more about career possibilities and meet really interesting people.

you can help a neighbour whose kids are away or help some one who is handicapped by tendering your time and energy in getting his / her groceries etc
