first a couple of things, first are u installing yourself, or are u getting a plumber or having HD or the other guys installing, that will determine if you are going to pay an additional amount. Also you have to get a permit from the city or county(usually). last and more importantly, how long do you expect to live in your home, reason bing for the lenght of the warranty on the water heater, HD sells a 6, 9 and 12 year parts warranty water heater. The 12 year has a self cleaning feature that keeps sediment low in the tank. Installation and heater runs around $700.00 for the 12 year model...

It depends on a bunch of things. First of all was the original heater installed properly? For instance was it strapped properly? does it have proper venting and clearances? Does it have a TP valve and drain tube extending to the outside? If it is in a garage does it have a stand giving at least 18" clearance off the floor? are the gas and water pipes supplying the water heater in good shape? Is there a shut-off valve on the cold water supply? Is there an easy access and easy shut-off gas valve installed? Are the hot, cold, and gas line all bonded together to maintain the same electronic potential in the event of an electrical fault where a wire is touching a pipe? If you can answer yes to these questions then a new water heater can go back into the existing space (if it is of the same dimensions). Best case senario $200 (not including the water heater.)
If you want it done right it can cost quite a bit to correct the deficiencies that I noted above. It could run $300-500 or more in labor costs depending on what is required and how much work is needed to bring the installation up to accepted building standards.

Do you mean how much SHOULD you be charged or how much WILL you be charged?
If the job is pretty straightforward, figure on two people to show up, disconnect the old heater and haul it out, and bring the new heater in. One guy leaves, the other guy stays and plumbs the new one in, or both stay and one pipes the gas while the other pipes the water. One gets done first, so he goes out and hangs around smoking and talking to his girlfriend on his cell phone, or hits on the homeowners wife.
Figure about $200 plus the cost of the water heater.
