I was married to an equipment operator for 30 years so I honestly know what I'm talking about here.
Advantage:
Decent money, lots of over time, usually you don't need a lot of enhanced education depending on the equipment you plan on operating. You don't have to spend a load on business clothing you can usually get away with jeans, your older shirts and work boots. Most of this type of work is outdoors which is great for those who feel trapped inside working.

Disadvantages:
A lot of work requiring equipment operators is out of town which is ok if you're single but really tough if you're married or in a relationship.
A lot of the newer equipment is computerized and therefore you need to know computers to some degree or be willing to take some training.
If you're working on a construction sites expect to come home dusty all the time.
A lot of the construction is seasonal so you may not be working year around.
In many cases it's very repetitious - you do the same thing or route day in and day out.
You need to be somewhat mechanically inclined in order to service your equipment out in the field if necessary.

No matter what you decide be prepared to take courses as technology takes over and equipment becomes more high tech. Also be prepared to take safety courses and expect to see inspectors periodically checking up on you. If you have the drive to stick it out you can expect to earn a decent living.
