An antibiotic is a drug that kills or prevents the growth of bacteria.
Tylenol and Advil are not antibiotics. They must be bought by prescription only. Penicillin is the most notable one.

.the two things you mentioned are not anti antibiotics.
antibiotics are medications used to treat / kill bacterial infections.
the drugs require a prescription .drugs such as penicillin are antibiotics. Penicillin was the first drug of this kind .
there are now many variations of the drug. one of the things they all have in common is the ending of the word. cillin is seen at the end of the drugs name this is one way a person would know right off that a drug is an antibiotic.
prior to getting a prescription from a doctor a person should always make sure the doctor knows about every medicine or drug you take including birth control pills and things you buy without a prescription or drugs you buy on the street illegally.
the pharmacy should also know all of this and it is best to have all of your medicines come from the same pharmacy . Telling the doctor about all of the drugs you take and using the same drug store all the time will result in a person being much safer

Be careful as to what other "medicines'" you are taking with birth control I mean your GF, because it can be harmful and not as effective as well.
An antibiotic is a drug that kills or prevents the growth of bacteria. They have no effect against viruses or fungal infections
This is tylenol...Acetaminophen can be used along with any antibiotic, cold or cough remedy (providing Acetaminophen is not one of the ingredients).

No Tylenol and Advil stuff like that are not antibiotics, and they won't affect her birth control. But penicillian and augmenton (well, that is penicillan I guess), and stuff like that DOES affect her birth control, it makes it not work. So if you have any questions just call a pharmacy and they can help you.

The word means "destructive of life." Antibiotics are chemical substances, produced by living organisms or synthesized (created) in laboratories, for the purpose of killing other organisms that cause disease. Some cancer therapies interfere with the body's ability to fight off infection (they suppress the immune system), so antibiotics may be needed along with the cancer treatment to protect against or kill infectious diseases.

No. Tylenol and Advil are not antibiotics. An antibiotic would be prescribed by a doctor unless it is topical (applied to skin).

Birth Control Pills & Antibiotics
Antibiotics might decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills (contraceptives). Birth control pills are composed of hormones that prevent the female reproductive system from preparing for insemination of the sperm.
There have been reports of pregnancy in women who have taken antibiotics while using birth control pills. The relationship has not been adequately studied to date. This may be in part because it is difficult getting volunteer women to take the pill with antibiotics to see if pregnancy occurs. Theoretically, additional medications might alter the metabolism and blood levels of the birth control hormones, thereby altering their effectiveness.
Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that antibiotics, such as rifampin, ampicillin, tetracylines, and griseofulvin have been reported to cause breakthrough bleeding and menstrual irregularities in women taking birth control pills. Similar effects have also been reported in women taking the seizure medications phenytoin and barbiturates.
It is also noteworthy that birth control pills are not 100 percent effective anyway.
It would be advisable for women who are using birth control pills to discuss with their doctors the use of additional contraceptive measures while taking antibiotics for optimal prevention of pregnancy.
An antibiotic is a drug that kills or prevents the growth of bacteria or fungi. They have no effect against viruses or parasites. Antibiotics are one class of antimicrobials, a larger group which also includes anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic drugs. They are relatively harmless to the host, and therefore can be used to treat infections. The term, coined by Selman Waksman, originally described only those formulations derived from living organisms, in contrast to "chemotherapeutic agents", which are purely synthetic. Nowadays the term "antibiotic" is also applied to synthetic antimicrobials, such as the sulfa drugs. Antibiotics are generally small molecules with a molecular weight less than 2000. They are not enzymes. Some antibiotics have been derived from mould, for example the penicillin class.
Unlike previous treatments for infections, which included poisons such as strychnine and arsenic, antibiotics were labelled "magic bullets": drugs which targeted disease without harming the host. Conventional antibiotics are not effective in viral, fungal and other nonbacterial infections, and individual antibiotics vary widely in their effectiveness on various types of bacteria. Antibiotics can be categorized based on their target specificity: "narrow-spectrum" antibiotics target particular types of bacteria, such as Gram-negative or Gram-positive bacteria, while broad-spectrum antibiotics affect a larger range of bacteria.
The effectiveness of individual antibiotics varies with the location of the infection, the ability of the antibiotic to reach the site of infection, and the ability of the bacteria to resist or inactivate the antibiotic. Some antibiotics actually kill the bacteria (bactericidal), whereas others merely prevent the bacteria from multiplying (bacteriostatic) so that the host's immune system can overcome them.
Oral antibiotics are the simplest approach when effective, with intravenous antibiotics reserved for more serious cases. Antibiotics may sometimes be administered topically, as with eye drops or ointments.
Antibiotics can also be classified by the organisms against which they are effective, and by the type of infection in which they are useful, which depends on the sensitivities of the organisms that most commonly cause the infection and the concentration of antibiotic obtainable in the affected tissue.
